Badass Girl is Vaxed!

5/26/2021

She's had her shots and is ready to start kicking ass again. In line with the lives of the creators, Badass Girl is waking up and leaving the house. In the past year, we've seen one con after another cancelled or postponed and had to hold up writing and illustration to spend that time homeschooling.
But now...we are finally getting back to normal.
Picture
As of today, the creative and marketing teams are getting ready to rejoin the Badass Girl Army. We're applying for upcoming  cons, working on the art for Issue 4, as well as the writing for the next story series.
Thanks for your patience, Badass Girl Army! We're looking forward to seeing you soon and bringing new Badasss Girl stuff to  the world!
Stay fierce!

Badass Girl Brings the Heat

It's hot in Badass Girl World! Mid-summer - time to sweat while kicking ass. We hope the entire Badass Girl Army is having a great summer, staying healthy, and enjoying (most of) the things we love about this time of year. Here are some Badass Girl tips for kicking ass (while staying healthy) and having a great summer:

Badass Girl's guide to a COVID-free summer:

Picture
Ask the bad guys to put on masks before you beat them down for stealing from innocent people.
Picture
Outdoor events are safer than indoor events.
Picture
Take a drive in the country instead of going to a crowded event.
Picture
Kicks provide more distance than punches or throws while pounding some sense into a villain.
Picture
Take on one thug at a time. Crowds are incubators for COVID.
Picture
Whether you're doing good or evil, cover your face to prevent the spread.
Have a great one and stay in touch, Badass Girl Army!

Kick Ass and Don't Get COVID!

These are crazy times! Badass Girl  and the whole team here at Blade Ridge Entertainment want everyone to be safe and healthy.
Picture
No, she hasn't gone Ninja. Badass Girl is just implementing good public health practices.
The Coronavirus crisis has forced us to modify our plans for the year. Rescheduled events and cons keep us hopping. Also, much to our dismay, it has put us a little behind on  the last phase of our Kickstarter rewards. We appreciate your patience and will get those out ASAP.
The GOOD NEWS is...Issue 3  will go to the printer within the next week or so. We are so excited to be delivering our first crowdfunded issue of Badass Girl. We couldn't have done it without the support of the Badass Girl Army.
Additionally, we are moving right along with final scripting edits for Issue 4 and will  give Brann the green light to proceed with illustration. You won't have to wait too long to see how this story arc - Badass Girl Saves the World - wraps up.

HARD COPY ACCESS
Our goal over the past year or so has been to get to as many cities and conventions as possible, to bring Badass Girl directly to readers and get you engaged in her adventures. Given large events and travel is going to be restricted for some time, we still want to be able to get the new content into your hands. We haven't done hard copy sales online in the past, but we feel is it important for us to create a means for you to obtain  them given the current situation.   Continue to watch this space for announcements and/
or follow us on FB, Instagram or Twitter. And, as always, spread the word!

Please be safe and with each others' help, we can kick COVID's ass!

You did it, Badass Girl Army! You helped us bring Badass Girl Saves the World Issue 3 to life with your support and pledges. We're so proud to know that there's a growing army of readers who want to see more of Badass Girl's adventures and want to pitch in - with $$ and outreach - to make it happen.
Raising money is easy, right? You just put up a Kickstarter page and watch the money roll in. Not so much. Our team worked for over two months putting together the Kickstarter page, creating videos and content, selecting rewards, and reaching out to you to let you know how you could contribute. And it's a success!

What happens between blog posts? All kinds of stuff!
After March's Big Apple Comic Con in NYC, we brought Badass Girl to Phoenix over Memorial Day weekend and met crowds of comic book enthusiasts and recruited an Arizona regiment to the Badass Girl Army.

And we've been working hard to polish Issue 2 and get it printed.

Next up, we'll be releasing Issue 2 at Silicon Valley Comic Con in San Jose, CA.
So, Badass Girl is not OFFICIALLY COAST TO COAST.
We're also planning a Kickstarter, so stay tuned!

If you want to introduce the toughest people in the world to the new toughest chick in the comics realm, Manhattan is the place to go.
Picture
Check out BACC's website
,Badass Girl made a great showing at BACC March  9-10. She brought the badass-ness and recruited a whole new troupe of East Coasters to the Badass Girl Army!
Actually, the BACC crowd was full of really nice people, enthusiastic comic book lovers, and fellow artists and vendors. I look forward to visiting them again and keeping in touch with new friends and recruits.

Badass Girls bring the style. Love her costume!
In New York City, I had to laugh at myself because I sometimes wanted to compliment a con-goer on their costume and then had a second thought - "That may just be the way they dress normally." That thought doesn't occur to me in any other city I've visited.
PictureBadass Girls stick together.

I've gone to a lot of cons over the years, selling my various books  and my experiences have always been good. But something about bringing Badass Girl to new readers is especially exciting. She's not for everyone, so readers who are attracted to the Badass Girl table are usually the smart,   confident, tough chicks whom our fierce girl represents - my favorite type. It's inspiring to see young women - and men, too - connect with Badass Girl. It makes me realize we're doing something right.
Picture
BEST FOR LAST - we've found the youngest and MOST ADORABLE recruit to the Badass Girl Army. OMG, she was so cute! And what a badass mom, already connecting her girl with strong, confident female role models!
We need more badass girls in our world.
Please tell everyone you know about Badass Girl and invite them to join the Army. Connecting a strong young woman character with readers and enthusiastic fans is the whole mission of what we're doing and you are a big part of it.
Thanks!

This Year's Debutante? Not So Much...

Wow! Time goes fast when you’re raising a true Badass Girl!

Looking around, we see badass female characters emerging everywhere. My latest faves are Octavia and Raven from The 100. Shame on me for not getting hip to this awesome girl-powered series earlier. My 10-year-old nephew got me started this summer - and I can’t get enough!
Picture
I see so much of Badass Girl in these characters - smart, strong, thoughtful, young women standing up for what’s right and fighting for it. Seeing women like them in action gets me pumping my fist in the air every time.
Badass Girl is hitting the streets, too. We debuted her at AniMinneapolis in May to great response - and lots of other badasses wanted in on the act.

Coming up next, Debi is taking Badass Girl to CampbellCon in California as I introduce her to a new group of fans at ValleyCon Fargo, ND this month! Then WizardWorld-Madison, WI is due for some Badassness in December. Can’t wait for more comic/superhero/action fans to see her. We’re building a Badass Girl Army one fan at a time.
Picture
Just this week, we’re getting illustrator Brann Garvey started on Issue 2, so look for announcement of more issues in Badass Girl Saves the World coming soon.

This is just the beginning. As Badass Girl brings more fans into her mission of bringing justice to a lawless land, her adventures and legend will spread.

Don't wait to jump onboard - join the   Badass Girl Army!

She's Growing Up!

A lot happens in just a few months when you’re creating a new character. It might be tempting to think I forgot about her – but BADASS GIRL is not a personality who can be ignored
We created a pre-publication draft of the comic, which we took to Santa Monica in November for the American Film Market. We wanted to get to know some producers early in the process so, when BADASS GIRL SAVES THE WORLD comic is released, we can start talking immediately about moving the concept toward a live-action film. That process takes a while and there’ll be more news on that as we move forward.

At MSP Comic Con in St. Paul in May, we teased the concept, passed out cards and met a lot of comic fans and artists. BADASS GIRL had a great reception. It was awesome seeing the light in people’s eyes when they saw the cover and heard about her story.

I’ve been working with illustrator Brann Garvey to refine the artwork. He has done an amazing job. We’re one step from printing Issue 1 for sale. You’ll be hearing more about that very soon.

Now BADASS GIRL needs your help. If you’re excited about bringing a brave new girl to the comic book community, you have a great opportunity. Join the army and tell everyone you know about this girl who walks the post-apocalypse Earth, kicking ass and righting wrongs.

The Badass Girl team’s dream is to bring to the world a truly badass female character and show ’em what one girl with a fierce attitude and some wicked skills can do!

The birth of Badass Girl - message from creator Chris Everheart

10/29/2017

Someone asked me recently if I'm a feminist. I said, "I have to be. I grew up with tough women. Nothing says gender equality like a well manicured fist to the face." My mother was a force to be reckoned with. My sister raised me with discipline and respect. Even the girls in my neighborhood were tough. I learned equality in an honest way - by living it. So I've always had a great deal of respect for women's strength and abilities.

All my life I've been more of a TV and movie fan than a book and comic book reader. I love the art of comic books and appreciate good writing, but reading has always been a challenge for me (odd to say, since I've become a writer). The most important thing to me is story. I'm always asking, "Does a character face a challenge - or a series of challenges - that makes them learn and grow?" Getting exposed to good stories is how I get fed - mind and soul.

In June 2017 I saw   Wonder Woman in the theater and fell in love all over again. When I was a kid, Linda Carter played Wonder Woman on TV. I never missed a kick-ass episode. I had my doubts that anyone could replace her as my ideal superhero woman. But Gal Gadot brings Wonder Woman to a whole new level. The film is great - lots of heart along with action and thrills. I laughed, teared up, and punched my fist in the air when Wonder Woman took on the enemy and won.  Simply put, Wonder Woman is BADASS - a woman for the 21st Century!

For me, there are 3 kinds of movies - those I don't like; those I like or  love; and those that make me want to DO SOMETHING. Wonder Woman is one of those "DO SOMETHING" movies. When I left the theater I was inspired. I wanted to CREATE.

Having written more than 20 books and graphic novels for young readers, I've practiced for years coming up with thrilling story concepts and and making them work for young characters who are going through trying experiences. I left the theater wondering (no pun intended) what a teen girl would do in a situation where nearly all is lost for humanity, and she was THE ONE who could bring strength to a messed up situation.
If such a girl were known, yet unknown - people she encounters know about her exploits but nothing about her personally - she'd be a living legend. What kind of position would that put her in? How would she react to admiration and fear? What would she think of anyone who wanted a piece of her?

I thought of Clint Eastwood's Man with No Name films and what a girl might do if faced with a lawless world where people need help. This girl would have to be a real BADASS!

The title came to me before the story - it happens like that between my ears sometimes: "Badass Girl Saves the World". Now all I had to do was figure out what it meant.

And what would we want a badass girl to do? Save the world, at least!
As an author, I have to be cruel to my characters - even though I love them. So I created a terrible world for Badass Girl - one decimated by an alien invasion that happened when she was a baby. Then I took away all modern comforts, throwing humanity back to medieval conditions.  I made Badass Girl an orphan who was nearly murdered before fleeing into the forest and adopted by a stern Chinese woman. Then I populated the world with well meaning but ineffectual people and lots of bad characters who would prey on them. BOOM! - bad news, but a good world for an action/adventure.

Walking the earth alone, with no family, no friends, and no place to call home - but desiring these connections like any human would (especially a teenager) - she would be confused by anything that looked like society. But she does have mad skills instilled by the mysterious and stern Chinese woman who raised her in the forest. In fact she'd have to be an outsider to use these skills to defend herself and others. No polite society - even the ones struggling for their existence - would tolerate the violence she brings to problem solving.

Her sense of justice won't let her team up with bullies and despots, but her sense of independence won't allow her to join a civilized group.
So, Badass Girl is in a bind. She gets by in the wilderness alone, defends herself and others when threats strike, but she can't really be a part of a community.

"Badass Girl Saves the World" is just one story of Badass Girl's legendary exploits. I'm dying to release these four comic book issues to the world and see if you love Badass Girl as much as I do. She's a lost soul who's there when we need her. She's not afraid to be herself. She takes action when needed. Badass Girl is, I hope, another woman for the 21st Century.
In addition to comics, we'll release a graphic novel and a novel - and have plans for a motion picture - all to bring Badass Girl's mission to the world.
Read and enjoy.  And join the movement. Badass Girl won't mind the help.
